Academy of Distinguished Alumni Inaugural Banquet

The First Academy of Distinguished Alumni Inaugural Banquet was held this past Friday, September 23rd at the Marriott Center, Campus Center 11th​ floor. These awards recognize the outstanding contribution of the inductees to the Engineering profession, as judged by the Civil and Environmental Engineering Advisory Council and reviewed by current Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty. There were 14 recipients: 

Mr. Daniel Adams graduated with a BSCE in 1986 and MSCE in 1988 from UMass Amherst. Mr. Adams has been the President and CEO of McMillen Jacobs Associates since 2011, and has 27 years of experience in underground engineering and construction, and has managed large projects in water, wastewater, and transit. 

Mr. Dick Bedard graduated with a BSCE from UMass Amherst in 1973. He worked for Gordon Ainsworth and Associates, and most notably for CH2M Hill in Boca Raton, Florida where he was the Project Manager for over 20 years.  He led major projects in many large cities in the US and throughout the world.

Ms. Ruth Bonsignore graduated with a BSCE from UMass Amherst 1983. Ms. Bonsignore has over 30 years of consulting experience in transportation engineering and served as Senior Vice President at VHB.  She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.    

Mr. Robert Brack graduated with a BSCE from UMass Amherst in 1960. He joined the Barker Steel Company, Inc. in 1960 and was CEO from 1976-2003.  He received a Distinguished Achievement Award from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in May of 2009 and currently serves on the board of directors of a variety of philanthropic organizations.  

Dr. Michael Chajes graduated with a BSCE from UMass Amherst in 1984. After receiving his doctoral degree, Dr. Chajes accepted a position at the University of Delaware where he has served as a faculty, department head, and as Dean of the College of Engineering.  

Mr. Stephen Kellogg graduated with a BSCE from UMass Amherst in 1972. Mr. Kellogg was Chief Executive Officer for YWC for 16 years, Senior Vice President for CDM, Inc. for 15 years, and currently is President of his own consulting firm, SRKellogg and Associates, Inc.

Dr. Minhaj Kirmani graduated with a MSCE and PhD from UMass Amherst in 1968 and 1976.  Dr. Kirmani has taught classes at MIT and Harvard University. He serves as Principal Emeritus at Thornton Tomasetti, Inc in Boston, and served as Principal for Weidlinger Associates Inc. 

Dr. Roberto Leon graduated with a BSCE from UMass Amherst in 1978. After receiving his doctoral degree, Dr. Leon accepted a position as an Assistant and Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota for 11 years.  He currently serves as David H. Burrows Professor of Construction Engineering at VA Tech.

Mr. William O’Neill graduated with a BSCE from the UMass Amherst in 1960. Mr. O’Neill was Director of Public Works/Town Engineer for Manchester, CT for over 20 years.  He also served as President of Fuss and O’Neill Consulting Engineers.  He was recognized as one of the College of Engineering Outstanding Engineering Alum in 1990. 

Mr. Richard Reardon graduated with a BSCE from UMass Amherst in 1958. Mr. Reardon spent his professional career working for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, with projects on disaster relief, flood control, navigation, and hydroelectric power services.  The College of Engineering honored Mr. Reardon as Alumnus of the Year in 1993.  

Dr. Dwight Sangrey graduated with a MSCE from UMass Amherst in 1964. Dr. Sangrey was a Professor at Cornell University for 9 years, Professor and Head of Civil Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University for 6 years, and President and CEO of Oregon Graduate Institute of Science and Technology for 7 years. Dr. Sangrey retired after serving as CEO and Director of Montag Resources, Inc.

Mr. John Sullivan graduated with a BSCE from UMass Amherst in 1972. He has spent his professional career of 44 years at the Boston Water and Sewer Commission, where he currently serves as Chief Engineer.  He also serves on the Board of Directors for The National Association of Clean Water Agencies, Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies and the Water Research Foundation

Mr. Robert Vanasse graduated with a BSCE from UMass Amherst in 1968. Mr. Vanasse is the principal and co-founder of Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Inc, an 1,100-person firm. He also founded Vanasse & Associates, a New England-based traffic engineering, transportation planning and engineering firm.                                                              

Dr. Paul Westerhoff graduated with a MS EWRE from the UMass Amherst in 1991. After receiving his doctoral degree, Dr. Westerhoff accepted a position as Assistant Professor at Arizona State University in 1995, and is currently Senior Advisor to the Provost for Engineering & Science at ASU.
