Industrial Engineering Major Attends First Ever European SWE Conference

Jennifer Greene

Jennifer Greene

While studying abroad last semester, Jennifer Greene of our Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department took the opportunity to attend the first ever European Conference of the Society of Women Engineers in Amsterdam, Holland. In a letter to the UMass Amherst chapter of SWE, Greene noted that “I just wanted to tell you how amazing the conference was and say thank you a thousand times for allowing me to go.”

In an accompanying write-up, Greene described her SWE experience in Holland. “I had the privilege of being supported by UMass College of Engineering, specifically Paula Rees in the Diversity Programs Office, to travel to Amsterdam for the first ever European Society of Women Engineers conference. This was great because it meant I’m still able to be involved with SWE while I’m abroad in Heidelberg, Germany. I spent Thursday and Friday rubbing shoulders with inspirational professional women engineers from all around the world and attending sessions about professional development.”

Greene added that “I attended sessions about emotional intelligence, cultural difference in work environments, learning to own you accomplishments, and a more technical session on designing for humor factors. I also enjoyed advice during a panel with five successful women in engineering about ‘The 2025 Engineer.’ I also attended a session about leveraging SWE in universities where I was very surprised to discover there are only TWO collegiate SWE chapters outside of the US, both in Turkey and started by girls who visited SWE while doing exchange programs in the US. Once I return to UMass in the fall I want to work with the International Programs Office to find any exchange students that are women in engineering and invite them to our SWE programs.” (June 2015)
