Patrick Quinlan, a 1982 graduate of the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) Department and a former associate director for the UMass Wind Energy Center, now makes his living establishing sustainable start-up energy companies in Massachusetts. He is the founder of Celadon Innovation, providing consulting services and renewable energy technology development that directly improves the lives of individuals, families, farms, and communities.
Altra Industrial Motion, whose CEO Carl Christenson is an alumnus and avid supporter of the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) Department, was recently named as the Boston Globe’s number 3 company in its “Top 100” list and its number one industrial company.
The UMass Amherst Supermileage (SMV) Team finished in fifth place at the Society of Automotive Engineers Supermileage® competition, held on June 7 and 8 at the Eaton Corporation Proving Grounds in Marshall, Michigan. The UMass team’s streamlined, three-wheel car finished the course with a whopping 843 miles per gallon! “As usual, we ran into a number of technical difficulties, which included killing an engine, two batteries, and a starter motor, but we persevered,” says SMV faculty advisor Jonathan Rothstein of the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department.
Thomas J. Laramee, who received his B.S. (1994) in Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics and his M.S. (1997) in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) from UMass Amherst, has created the Al Russell Memorial Scholarship Fund in memory of Dr. George Albert (Al) Russell, who passed away in April after a brief illness. Dr. Russell taught in the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department for 34 years after earning his doctorate in 1968. Alumnus Ken Lloyd of Duxbury, Massachusetts has established the Kenneth A. Lloyd Fellowship, which will award more than $25,000 per year to a qualified incoming doctoral student in the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) Department. Mr. Lloyd graduated from the College of Engineering in 1973, having majored in mechanical engineering. Alumna Alaina Hanlon, the president and CEO of the PhenotypeIT company that provides health and wellness software solutions to help individuals and organizations better identify and manage chronic health issues, took home the second-place $3,000 prize at the National Health Promotion Summit, where the Healthy People 2020 Leading Health Indicators App Challenge was staged. Team Community Commons won the $10,000 first prize. PhenotypeIT guides individuals gradually to change behaviors that are putting their health at risk.
