The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering has 36 full time tenure track faculty members, and approximately 700 undergraduate and 300 graduate students. The faculty in the Department are actively engaged in teaching, research and service across a wide spectrum of technical areas within mechanical and industrial engineering. New student spaces include the Exploratorium (which makes possible state-of-the art teaching and team projects) and the Altra Industrial Motion Innovation Shop (which provides undergraduates and graduate students with the latest in machining capabilities, including 3D printers, water jet cutters, and 4 axis milling machines).
Current active research areas include: Energy Systems with special emphasis on Off-shore Wind Energy and Energy Conservation; Mechanical Systems Design focusing on Sensors and Bioengineering; Information Engineering with concentration in Distributed Decision-Making; Healthcare Systems; Human-Factors Engineering with emphasis in Patient Safety and Transportation; Quality Management; Materials and Manufacturing with emphasis on Materials Processing and Intelligent Manufacturing; and Fluid Mechanics with emphasis on Large Scale Simulation and Non-Newtonian Fluids.
The department offers two undergraduate degree programs accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org: Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (B.S.M.E.) and the Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering (B.S.I.E.). For undergraduates, we also offer an engineering management minor (joint with the School of Management) and a certificate in materials science (joint with Chemical Engineering). At the graduate level, the department offers the Ph.D. and Master's programs in M.E. and I.E., and the M.S. in Engineering Management. The on campus master’s degree programs include a course only option as well as a thesis option for both the M.E. and I.E. master’s degrees. Moreover, we offer a five year B.S./M.S. program for those students who want to combine undergraduate and graduate study on campus. And finally, we offer an online M.S. degree in Engineering Management which provides students with the flexibility that they need both to succeed and advance in their careers.
We are a Department on the move. You can follow the links in the sidebar for more information on our department, our faculty and their research, and the different degree programs we offer, as well as on upcoming tours and open house events. If ever you have questions about our degree program, please do not hesitate to email or call me.
