MIE Seminar Series: Seamless integration of volatile renewable energy sources into an electricity market

Monday, March 6, 2017 - 9:00am

Golbon Zakeri

Kellogg Room, Elab II

In this presentation I will outline a number of recent research projects with an overarching theme of integration of volatile sources of energy into the power grid. These include positioning of wind farms and solar integration, demand response, and design of suitable stochastic market mechanisms. I will explore the proposed stochastic market clearing mechanism in detail, establish its desired properties and present some numerical results on its implementation. I hope to outline some open questions of interest to the research community at UMass and at large.

Golbon Zakeri is an Associate Professor in the department of Engineering Science at the University of Auckland. She obtained her PhD in Mathematics and Computer Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research centers around optimization and economics of energy with particular emphasis on electricity markets. She is a director of the Electric Power Optimization Centre and the deputy director of the Energy Centre at the University of Auckland. She is the president of the Operations Research Society of New Zealand.
