BusinessWest has recognized the Elaine Marieb Center for Nursing and Engineering Innovation as part of its Healthcare Heroes series.

The center, which successfully hosted its first annual symposium on campus on September 13, is being celebrated by BusinessWest for “bringing together two distinct disciplines in a way that makes perfect sense, and already finding success researching ways to improve patient care through better technology.”

The center’s co-directors are Dr. Frank Sup, associate professor of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, and Dr. Karen Giuliano, associate professor of Nursing.

BusinessWest specifically highlights the important work that Giuliano and postdoctoral research fellow Jeannine Blake are doing on IV smart pumps; Giuliano and Blake’s recent paper, “Nurse and Pharmacist Knowledge of Intravenous Smart Pump System Setup Requirements,” was recently recognized by the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation as the Best Research Paper in 2021.

BusinessWest also underscores the research that the center is conducting into applications of robotics in healthcare. Under Sup’s leadership, the center has begun pairing students from both engineering and nursing to identify challenges and develop robotic solutions to improve healthcare delivery for patients.
