In late April, the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department held its annual banquet to celebrate some of the department’s stars. Dr. Bernd Schliemann, the senior lecturer in the MIE department, was presented with the award for Outstanding Mechanical Engineering Professor, while Associate Professor Jenna Marquard received the award for Outstanding Industrial Engineering Professor.
A lecturer at the college since 2008, Schliemann has also served as the director of planning and workforce development in the Office of University Outreach and a professor and department chair in the Department of Military Leadership at UMass. He was previously an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the United States Military Academy. He has his Ph.D. in Regional Planning and M.B.A. in Business Administration from UMass, an M.S. in Industrial Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and a B.S. in Operations Research from the United States Military Academy.
Among other honors, Marquard has received a National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 2012, the College of Engineering Barbara H. and Joseph I. Goldstein Outstanding Junior Faculty Award in 2012, a UMass Team-Based Learning Fellowship for 2012-2013, and a Lilly Teaching Fellowship in 2011-2012. She was the Industrial Engineering Advisor of the Year (Student Voted) for 2010, 2011, and 2012. She earned her B.S. at the University of Iowa, and her M.S. and Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin – Madison.
Meanwhile, Rick Winn was given the award for Outstanding MIE Staff Member at the banquet. This year Winn was selected as one of the 10 staff members at UMass Amherst to receive the 2016 Chancellor’s Citation. Winn is responsible for the supervision of the entire MIE student shop, recently upgraded and renovated into the Altra Industrial Motion Innovation Shop. The UMass Chancellor’s Citation is awarded for original contributions to the university, attainment of high-priority university objectives, performance "beyond the call of duty" and, achievement of significant improvements in productivity or savings in university operations.
Among the students there were three awards handed out. Justin Calderara received the Academic Award. The Student Service Award went to Jennifer Greene. And A.J. Frere was honored with the Outstanding Senior Student Award. (May 2016)
